RCEDC Supports Mexico Lindo's Expansion with Local RLF Program
City of Racine, WI – Jose Contreras Jr., began his career as a business owner in 2021 when he became the owner of Mexico Lindo, a 65-year old family-owned restaurant located in the City of Racine.
Â
Through the years, Mexico Lindo continued its decades-long tradition of serving authentic, unchanged Mexican cuisine, with the addition of just one dish—mini burritos—solidifying its place as a beloved community staple. Jose dedicates his mornings to preparing food for their signature menu before heading to his full-time job at SC Johnson’s Waxdale. Jose’s wife, Sendi, expertly manages the daily operations, ensuring the restaurant runs smoothly, with the help of three dedicated staff members. In the evening, Jose returns to support Sendi and the bustling restaurant.
Prior to Jose’s ownership, Mexico Lindo was run as a sole proprietorship by Sendi’s parents. In 2018, the Contreras family relocated Mexico Lindo from the southside of Racine to its current location at 600 6th Street in downtown Racine. The relocation to downtown Racine allowed the Contreras family to retain their loyal customer base while also attracting new patrons.
Â
When the Contreras purchased Mexico Lindo in 2021, they restructured it as an LLC. They then transitioned from leasing to owning the new downtown Racine location. With assistance from RCEDC, Jose secured a $92,400 loan from the City of Racine’s Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) and an additional $159,600 loan from Town Bank, covering 90% of the property’s cost. By utilizing RCEDC’s RLF programs, Jose minimized his down payment to just 10%.
Partnering with RCEDC to secure a Revolving Loan Fund loan was an amazing experience. Their support made it possible for us to officially purchase our downtown property, turning a dream into reality. This means so much to us and our loyal customers. Thanks to RCEDC and Town Bank, for their hard work and dedication to helping preserve the legacy of Mexico Lindo.
The purchase of their commercial real estate is a significant milestone for Mexico Lindo, affirming their commitment to maintaining a cherished community gem. Since relocating in 2018, Mexico Lindo has become a staple in downtown Racine, earning glowing reviews and participating in events like First Fridays, Party on the Pavement, Wine Walks, and 4th Fest. The restaurant continues to delight patrons with its timeless recipes and vibrant presence.
