Summit Packaging breaks ground on new 77k sf Racine facility

by Jeremy Williamson

City of Racine, WI – Summit Packaging Systems celebrated the 77,000 sf expansion to their current facility located at 3441 S. Memorial Dr with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, April 5th.

Representatives gathered from partnering organizations – including the City of Racine, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), the Racine County Economic Development Corporation (RCEDC)Racine County and VJS Construction Services.

“We are so incredibly grateful for all the support we received at the local and state levels,” said Scott Gilroy, Vice President of Operations at Summit Packaging. “Summit Packaging Systems has a strong history of operations in Racine and we are proud to dig our roots deeper into this community.”

To facilitate Summit Packaging’s investment in Wisconsin, WEDC is supporting the project with up to $500,000 in performance-based tax credits if the company creates at least 145 jobs and invests at least $20 million in capital expenditures.

“Summit Packaging is exactly the kind of global industry leader that belongs in Wisconsin,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “WEDC is pleased to support their commitment to continued growth in our state.”

Additionally, the City of Racine worked with RCEDC to create a Tax Increment District (TID) over the proposed expansion site, where Summit Packaging Systems will receive a financial incentive to assist with the new development – over the course of 10 years.

“We are excited to break ground today. The Gilroy family and the entire Summit team have been great partners to work with,” said City of Racine Mayor Cory Mason. “Summit has a track record of hiring City residents and this expansion provides new opportunities for our community to access family sustaining jobs. Creation of a new Tax Increment District (TID) to support this expansion and create jobs is exactly what TIDs were designed to do. This is a win for the City and I hope more City residents will look for employment opportunities with Summit.”

Construction on the expansion project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2023. Summit Packaging is already hiring full-time and part-time employees for all shifts to execute a successful expansion project.
